The PVVA Youth Corps participated in the Putnam Valley Middle School Wellness Fair, Thursday, November 13th. They featured blood pressure readings and conducted CPR hands-on demonstrations. As members of the Youth Corps, they participate in first aid and safety training and also get to ride as a "crew" member once they turn 16. The Youth Corps advisors Debbie Petranchik and Kathy VanHorn noted that the members also have the opportunity to develop leadership skills by holding officer positions. In addition to the training they receive, they also have a full agenda of fun and team building activities. They have an upcoming cookie baking party and are planning winter and summer trips. Comments from some of the members as to: "Why I joined the Youth Corps?" Frannie Sills the 1st Lt. and one of the senior members noted that the Corps helps students develop leadership skills and it's also an opportunity to meet new friends. Martha Lua has an interest in medicine. Amy Cobb would like to be a nurse and the corps offers an opportunity for more social activities. Jim Hertzel and Kristen Weeks like the idea of doing community service and helping others.
To join the Youth Corps teenagers must be 13 years of age. Applicants do not require previous first aid or CPR experience. If you are a Putnam Valley resident and have an interest in joining, you can contact one of the advisors at 845-526-3119.
